Envisioned as a neo-Baroque chamber concerto, this 3-movement piece would program well with the works of Bach or Vivaldi, or with Poulenc’s Organ Concerto for the same instrumentation. The challenging opening “toccata” verges at times on minimalism with its driving rhythms patterns. The 5-voice counterpoint of the academic “canon” devolves into rich tonal clusters orbiting like celestial spheres around the central theme, only resolving to a big A-major chord after much harmonic build-up. The “fantasia” explores two reflecting motives, one constantly falling into an inferno and one rising heavenward. Which one triumphs?
